Begum Baccal was born in Istanbul in 1989 to a family in the textile industry. When she was 9 years old she took to horse riding and had high hopes of making a career out of it but for sustained injuries which made her opt out. Her fading horse riding ambitions would see her devote more time to drawing – a hobby which would go on to define her future career.
From early childhood, Begum Baccal as all young girls had a passion for dresses and everything about dressing. It was a passion which was complemented by the fact that her family was in the clothing and textile business.
That coupled with the drawing lessons she continued taking in high school convinced her that designing was a profession that matched her interests and talent. It was a talent she was determined to develop by spending her summer holidays taking classes at the Central Saint Martins Design School. Following her high school graduation, she got a place at the London College of Fashion where she studied Stage and Costume Design. She returned home a year later to further understand the Turkish textile industry and for that sole reason she enrolled for a B.A degree in Textile and Fashion Design at Mimar Sinan University's Academy of Arts. She would later point out that the courses she took such as textile engineering, marketing, management, edition and history of art were more than influential in her future designs but more essential was the deepened understanding of herself which came with immersing herself in her own culture following a foreign experience.
Begum Baccal attempted to study every area of designing, she took 6 months long cooking courses at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and participated in the workshops in Ritz Escoffier. She believes that all these experiences have had great impact on her career. She realized that cooking is also a creative process like drawing or making dresses. Baccal is of the conviction that knowledge gained is never sufficient and that one should always strive to get better.
She created the brand “Begüm Baccal” with the aim to make dresses for women of all ages and body types and more importantly to ensure that women feel sexy, strong and dynamic.
